Chief Deputy Cantrell and Reserve Deputy Mulkey were murdered during a traffic stop. Their bodies were found locked in the trunk of their patrol car on Hwy 9 just South of Cumming.

Sergeant Land was killed in a motorcycle accident while responding to a fight call, involving two motorists on the side of a highway, at approximately 1600 hours. His police motorcycle collided with two vehicles on Highway 20 just south of Georgia 400.
Sergeant Land had been promoted to the rank of sergeant only two days earlier. He had been with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Department for five years, and had been in law enforcement for a total of 12 years. He is survived by his wife and 6-year-old daughter.
